Construction to start on new Lloydminster Dialysis Unit
Work is moving forward to improve access to hemodialysis treatment for residents in the Lloydminster area with construction of a new dialysis unit.
Chandos Construction Ltd. has been selected to build the new dialysis space, which will have six stations for dialysis treatment, up from the current five spaces. This will allow it to serve 24 patients, up from 20 patients being served in the current unit. The new unit will also have the potential to expand to up to nine stations to address future patient needs.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) will operate the unit in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).
“Expanding dialysis services will allow residents of Lloydminster and area access to dialysis closer to home, reducing travel for many clients currently receiving services elsewhere,” said Tracy Delorme, Interim Executive Director, Alberta Kidney Care North, Alberta Health Services.
“This partnership between the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and AHS allows for more people requiring dialysis treatments to remain within the community,” said Andrew McLetchie, Vice President, Integrated Northern Health, Saskatchewan Health Authority. “Providing additional capacity in the delivery of dialysis services to our Saskatchewan and Alberta clients leads to better health outcomes and less time spent travelling for health-related services.”
Hemodialysis patients typically receive three, four-hour treatments per week.
Construction of the new unit has begun, starting with the commencement of demolition works in early, September. Construction and commissioning of the new unit is expected to be complete by Spring 2025. The new dialysis unit will be located in the Community Services Building at 3830 43 Ave., Lloydminster.
The dialysis project has received $6.2 million in funding from the Alberta government’s Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program. The Lloydminster Regional Health Foundation plans to provide support as well.
