What is Gynecology?
Gynecology is the medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive system.
What is a gynecologist?
A Gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the health of the female organs.
What do gynecologists do?
Gynecologists see women of all ages with gynecologic concerns. Their goal is to improve your quality of life and start with a complete assessment of the concern, which often includes an exam in person. Then they offer the appropriate medical and/or surgical management of the identified problem.
Common reasons for referral and consultation include:
- Period problems (heavy, irregular, painful, premenstrual syndrome)
- Contraception
- Leaky bladder, vaginal prolapse
- Pelvic pain
- Abnormal Pap smear (screening test for cervical cancer)
- Abnormal ultrasound
- Difficulty getting pregnant or recurrent miscarriage
- Concerning growth on the genital organs
- Bleeding after menopause
- Vaginal discharge or infections
- Sexual dysfunction
- Menopausal symptoms
Common surgical procedures performed include:
- Hysterectomy(removal of the uterus)
- Ovarian surgery - cyst removal, ovary removal
- Fibroid removal
- Endometrial ablation
- Urogynecology procedures – bladder “lifts”, prolapse repairs
- Tubal sterilization
- Colposcopy (investigation required following an abnormal Pap smear)
- LEEP biopsy (treatment for precancer cells on the cervix)
- Minimally invasive diagnosis/treatment procedures including laparoscopy (using a camera to look in the pelvis) and hysteroscopy (using a camera to look in the uterus)

Gynecologist specialists are located in North Battleford, Lloydminster, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, and Yorkton. Outreach clinics are available in some other centres.
How can you access a gynecologist?
Gynecology services by specialist physicians are available for all women in Saskatchewan by referral from their primary care provider.
