Accreditation
External evaluation and accreditation ensures continuous improvement in the quality of care and services provided by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).
What is Accreditation?
As part of our commitment to quality and safety, the SHA’s services are evaluated against national standards of excellence. Each review involves a comprehensive internal self-assessment and a rigorous external on-site survey by national experts from Accreditation Canada. The combined results help us to identify what is being done well and what needs improvement.
Why is Accreditation important?
Accreditation helps create better health care for you, your family and your community. It enables us to regularly and consistently examine and improve the quality of our services. It also enables us to understand how to make better use of our resources, reduce risk and enhance quality and safety for everyone.
A Unique Accreditation Model
The SHA has a unique Accreditation Model for gaining accreditation for the organization as a whole over 4-year cycles. It was developed in collaboration with Patient and Family Partners and First Nations and Metis partners, and approved by Accreditation Canada. One of the following 4 areas has an on-site survey each year, in rotation.
- Maternal and child health care and governance
- Primary health care, mental health and addictions, community care
- Inpatient care
- Continuing care

Accreditation and Patient and Family Centred Care
Accreditation involves everyone from the Board of Directors to front line staff and patients and families. Patients and their families provide valuable perspective that helps us shape how we deliver our services. Patients and families play many roles:
- Care providers and patients partner in co-designing, planning, assessing and delivering care
- Patients/families are included as part of collaborative care teams
- Patients/families are engaged to ensure their understanding of and meaningful participation in their care
- Services and the quality of care are monitored and evaluated with input from patients/families
