Saskatchewan Bleeding Disorders Program
Who is the Program for?
The program provides care to adults and children with bleeding-related diseases for all of Saskatchewan.
Program Goals
- To provide care to individuals and their families who have :
- Hemophilia - A rare blood disease where you may bleed for a longer time after an injury.
- Von Willebrand Disease (VWD) – Another rare blood disease where you may bleed for a longer time because your body doesn’t make enough certain blood cells or these certain blood cells don’t work properly.
- Other bleeding diseases – passed on from parents or grandparents.
- To make sure people with bleeding diseases have access to proper and timely health care.
- To support people and their families in managing their bleeding disease.
Services Provided
- Clinics staffed by the following team members:
- Hematologist – a blood specialist doctor who provides care to adults.
- Pediatric Hematologist –a blood specialist doctor who provides care for children.
- Nurse Coordinator - a registered nurse who plays a key role in the patient’s care and provides education to those who care for them.
- Physiotherapist - helps people with injuries through movement and exercise. Provides education on physical status and activity participation.
- Social Worker - helps people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives.
- Genetic Counselor- gives you information about how genetic conditions might affect you or your family.
- Clinical and laboratory (x-ray, blood work etc.) services.
- Support of home medication.
- Assessment of physical difficulties.
- Help with medications for surgery, procedures and child birth.
- Emotional and mental health.
- Patient and health care education.
- General public and school education.
- Employer education.
How do I see the Bleeding Disorders Team?
Referral from your family doctor or a nurse practitioner to the blood specialist doctor.
Where do I see the Bleeding Disorders Team?
Regular clinics are held in Saskatoon and Regina throughout the year. Telephone appointments are as needed.
Cost
There is no cost to be part of the Saskatchewan Bleeding Disorders Program.
