Organization
University of Saskatchewan
Role overview
This patient will participate in the research by reporting their experience and suggesting ways to make this process less traumatic, ensuring comfort and quality of life for the patients who will go through this experience during the execution of the project. The person with lived experience will also make suggestions and participate in the training of the trainees on how to deal with the participants’ needs during exam acquisition, ensuring empathy during this process.
Required knowledge, experience, skills
Patients who have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and gone through treatment will be the person with lived experience with the role of guiding the team towards a less traumatic diagnosis process.Time commitment
The patient will collaborate by dedicating one hour/week to the project
Location
College of Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan and virtual
What can you expect from the research team?
The research team constitutes of a principal investigator (Assistant professor of Oral Radiology, College of Dentistry at USask), a co-principal (Assistant Professor University Medical Imaging Consultants, Medical Imaging) and four trainees. The researchers are invested in the patient's view on the research process. The outcomes of this project will extend beyond scientific publications. This study aims to enhance patient diagnosis, treatment planning, and outcomes by developing an AI model to improve the initial screening of thyroid nodules. Detecting malignant thyroid nodules will be achieved with less effort using a low-cost, user-friendly, contactless imaging modality that requires minimal operator training and poses no risk to the patient. These preliminary results will serve as a foundation for continued research, aiming to test IT and US image fusion to further improve the findings of this study and train Saskatchewan’s healthcare professionals across various disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, and nursing.
