Better, Safer, Stronger Together
A safe, respectful, and inclusive medical culture is foundational to high-quality care and a sustainable health system. This is a shared commitment.
On July 7, 2025, the Ministry of Health released an independent review of the Regina physician hospital workplace culture. Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is working collaboratively with the Saskatchewan Medical Association and other health-system partners to engage with Regina hospital physicians to action the report’s clear, thoughtful recommendations. We thank all physicians, learners, and partners who shared their experiences to help guide this important work.
Meaningful change will take time and collaboration—but together we are committed to improving physician experiences, strengthening teams and enhancing care for patients across Saskatchewan.
The report outlines 14 recommendations across four themes:
- Bylaws and Professionalism: governance, bylaws, conflict of interest, and standards of conduct.
- Culture and Engagement: workplace climate, equity, and inclusive participation of patients, physicians, and learners.
- Physician Resource Planning: recruitment, contracts, compensation, and workforce stability.
- Leadership and Infrastructure: systems that support physician leadership and integrated decision-making.
Actions already complete include:
- A new SHA senior physician leadership structure with clearer roles, stronger integration, and a dedicated Regina focus.
- A restructured SHA Practitioner Staff Affairs team to better support physicians.
- SHA’s Our Commitment to Each Other: Patient Rights and Responsibilities developed with patients, families, physicians, and Indigenous partners.
- An SHA anti-racism framework and SMA initiatives advancing equity, diversity and inclusion.
- A new SHA “Supporting Professionalism in the Workplace” physician leadership manual.
