Functional Rehabilitation Program
Functional Rehabilitation Program
The Functional Rehabilitation Program (FRP) is a leading provider of rehabilitation and disability management services to corporations, individuals, insurers and the private sector. Our team approach to functional restoration is comprehensive and multidisciplinary. We bring together occupational therapists, physical therapists, exercise therapists, psychologists, chiropractors, therapy assistants and medical doctors. The Functional Rehabilitation Program customizes our disability management programs to meet specific client and customer needs. The combination of experience and expertise help to prevent on-the-job injuries and ensure a safe return to work and to life's many activities.
Statement of Purpose
The Functional Rehabilitation Program provides a variety of services focused on injury prevention and recovery. It does so through workplace wellness initiatives and disability management – assessment, treatment, education, and research.
FRP uses a coordinated approach with multiple disciplines to provide client-centered care. We help clients to increase function, independence, and well-being by responding to physical and emotional needs. FRP works within an evidence-based and client-centered practice which strives to be cost efficient. We also develop linkages to primary and secondary health providers, the insurance industry and the community-at-large to promote the health and well-being of clients.
About Us
Clinical members of FRP team include physical therapists, occupational therapists, exercise therapists, psychologists, physicians and a Rehabilitation Coordinator. All of these individuals have extensive knowledge and experience in the assessment and treatment of musculo-skeletal and mental health disorders.
- Physical therapists with advanced orthopedic training evaluate injuries related to work, motor vehicle collisions, sports, and activities of daily living injuries. Physical therapy treatment can include, but is not limited to, manual therapy, aquatic therapy, acupuncture, dry needling, exercise prescription, vestibular/balance retraining, use of treatment modalities including ultrasound and laser therapy, recommending assistive devices/walking aids/orthotics and education regarding the injury with focus on the development of self-management strategies.
- Occupational therapists assist clients to reach and maintain their highest level of function by treatment of client limitations, education and modification of the environment. Occupational therapists provide a range of assessments and treatment including: facilitating graduated return to work/home/community programs, prescribing functional conditioning and work simulation programs, as well as conducting functional capacity evaluations, residual capacity evaluations and functional ability evaluations. Occupational Therapists are skilled in completing worksite assessments, physical demands analysis, driver evaluation assessments and ergonomic evaluations. Occupational Therapists also specialize in upper extremity injuries often as a result of trauma or repetitive strain. Hand therapy may include wound and scar management, pain management, range of motion exercises, strengthening, dexterity training and desensitization.
- Exercise Therapists at FRP provide treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. Exercise Therapists also assist in client’s return to active leisure pursuits. Instruction of individual strength, flexibility, cardiovascular, aquatic therapy, core stability, yoga and fitness education is provided by the Exercise Therapist.
- Psychologists at FRP assess and treat mental health problems and psychosocial concerns related to their injuries. The assessment process involves questions about pain, mood, anxiety, stress, sleep, coping mechanisms, family and other social supports, and any other issues that might be affecting their mental health and physical recovery. Treatment may involve psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help clients cope more effectively with any of these areas which are causing them difficulty.
- The Rehabilitation Coordinator in conjunction with our administrative support staff process the assessment and treatment referrals from our external stakeholders. This involves gathering specific information about the services being requested to ensure that the most appropriate assessment and treatment are initiated.
- Referrals to FRP are generally made through a client’s Medical Practitioner, SGI, WCB or another insurance provider.
Program and Services
- Hand Therapy Services – These services can be accessed by the general public and those covered by SGI, WCB or other third-party providers. Within the Public Hand Program priority is given to clients who have had a surgical procedure either from a traumatic injury or elective surgical procedure.
- Tertiary Rehabilitation Services – FRP provides comprehensive tertiary assessment and treatment rehabilitation services by a team of highly trained and experienced rehabilitation professionals. Most of our clients are covered by either WCB or SGI and are seen for assessment and/or treatment services. FRP is a fee-for-service program so funding needs to be confirmed prior to receiving services.
