Research Ethics Board
The SHA Research Ethics Board (REB) reviews research taking place in the SHA to verify that it is:
- scientifically valid,
- meets ethical principles, and
- complies with all applicable regulations and standards pertaining to human participant protection.
Approval from one of the following REBs is necessary before any research begins in the SHA:
- SHA
- University of Saskatchewan (USask)
- University of Regina (U of R)

In accordance with Article 6.4 of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2, 2022), and Part C Division 5 of the Health Canada Regulations Amending the Food and Drug Regulations (C.05.010, 20-Aug-19), the Research Ethics Board includes a minimum of five members, including men and women, the majority of whom are Canadian citizens or permanent residents under the Immigration Act, with collective expertise in the areas of research, patient care, ethics, and law. The Chair appoints members to the Board. The REB consists, at a minimum, of:
- Two members who have expertise in relevant research disciplines, fields and methodologies covered by the REB;
- A member knowledgeable in ethics (e.g., ethicist, clergy)
- A lawyer
- A health care consumer from the community
Ad hoc members with expertise in specific areas may also be requested by the Chair of the Board to participate as needed.
REB terms are typically 5 years, with a maximum of 3 terms. Term limits may be extended at the discretion of the Chair in order to meet membership requirements.

Standard Operating Procedures
New standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the SHA REB are in effect as of July 10, 2023. The SOPs have been adapted from the Network of Networks (N2) and the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards (CAREB-ACCER) SOPs for research ethics boards in Canada and reviewed and approved by the SHA REB at full board meetings.
