Long COVID Self-Management - Paced Breathing
Paced Breathing or Blow as You Go
This is a method that helps you manage your breathing while doing other things. You can use this method when you are doing anything that makes you short of breath (e.g.: climbing stairs, lifting something heavy, standing up, or walking uphill). Think about breaking up the activity into smaller parts. This will make it easier to do the activity without getting too tired or short of breath at the end. See planning section for details.
How to Pace Your Breathing When Feeling Short of Breath - Breathing Exercises
- You may find it helpful to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth while performing this technique
- Breathe in before you make the effort (i.e., before you climb a step)
- Breathe out while making the effort (i.e., climbing a step)
