Advancing the SHA’s Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
In November 2024, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) dedicated the Primary Health Care – Integrated Urban Health Regina Leadership Forum to Truth and Reconciliation and health equity. To foster learning, sharing and growth among leaders and physicians, and encourage deeper discussion, frontline staff from five different clinical areas were invited.
With guidance from Elders, SHA Patient Family Partners and Primary Health Care teams, the forum included learning from Founding Partner and Chair of OneHoop Indigenous Advisory Services, Cadmus Delorme. His insights helped leaders and staff reflect on the realities of Indigenous history, as well as explore meaningful ways to bring reconciliation and equity into daily work. Métis Nation–Saskatchewan Western Region III provided a space for the gathering to occur.
Staff and leaders participated in a guided Equity Walk in nine patient-facing sites to identify barriers and actions that create disparity or inequitable access to care. A checklist was completed of observations and suggestions for improvement for each space assessed. Teams are now developing and acting on action plans of how they will improve their space, making it more welcoming from a lens of equity. This is just one small step in Primary Health Care – Integrated Urban Health Regina actioning Truth and Reconciliation and health equity within its sites, ensuring we align with the health-related Calls to Action and the SHA commitment statements.
