Saving lives one flight at a time
Since 1946 Saskatchewan Air Ambulance (SAA) has been taking “patients from where they are, to where they need to be,” says Bryan Lester, Critical Care Nurse for SAA.
Twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, SAA flies to all corners of the province, and beyond – anywhere that has a runway that is accessible for their planes.
Even though the critical care flight nurses and paramedics at SAA are all experienced health-care providers before joining the team, they must learn new skills and processes to provide safe care while in the air, as part of the SHA's CARES values (compassion, accountability, respect, equity, and safety).
“We all have the same training,” says Lester. “It’s very extensive, and I know that my partner has got my back at all times. It’s just a wonderful atmosphere to be in when you have everyone on board in that way.”
