Patient and Family Leadership Council embodies Truth and Reconciliation
On June 8, 2023 the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Patient and Family Leadership Council (PFLC), and SHA board members shared a Day on the Land. The day was grounded in teachings, led by Vernon J. Linklater, Cultural Advisor, on the sacred sweat ceremony, including a tour of a sweat lodge at Whitecap Dakota First Nation. The day allowed PFLC members to reconnect and commit to relationships with the land and one other by experiencing traditional teachings together.
Andrew Will, SHA CEO, SHA said “I am deeply honoured for the opportunity to once again participate in the Day on the Land with an incredible group of individuals who continue to dedicate their efforts to support the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s commitment to Patient and Family Centred Care. The passion and hard work amongst the team is one that will continue to have a significant impact on the people of Saskatchewan.”
“Thank you to Vernon who took the time to share his experiences and wisdom with the group, and to the SHA for creating this unique opportunity to move out of our comfort zones and get creative about leading, connecting, and partnering to embed the principles and practices of Patient and Family Centered Care.” Kevin Belitski, PFLC, Patient Family Partner member shared.
PFLC took a symbolic approach to strategic planning using the wisdom of trees to navigate conversations about connecting SHA priorities to the future roll out of a provincial Patient and Family Rights and Responsibilities charter. This aligns with the PFLC purpose to lead, connect and partner with the SHA to embed the principles and practices of Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC). It supports SHA’s commitment to truth and reconciliation through the recognition and incorporation of the interconnectedness as partners, respecting Indigenous and western ways of knowing in PFLC’s approach.
