Walking in her mother’s footsteps
“When the pandemic hit, everything in the healthcare world changed.”
Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, Registered Nurse Crystal Kuras let her manager at Tisdale Hospital know that she was open to being redeployed if she was needed elsewhere.
Earlier this year, Kuras was asked her if she was still interested in redeploying, as there was a need for a nurse with emergency room experience at Wakaw Primary Healthcare and Collaborative Emergency Center.
She leaped at the opportunity.
“My mother’s first job as a Registered Nurse after graduating from her training in 1971 was at the Wakaw Hospital,” she explained. “She was in Wakaw for a year before she got married and moved to Medicine Hat, then settling in Quill Lake until she retired.”
Kuras graduated from the Nurse Education Program of Saskatchewan in 2009, spent a year at the Regina General Hospital, and then moved to Tisdale.
“I worked in long-term care before moving over to the Tisdale hospital,” she explained. She is currently Day Supervisor at Tisdale Hospital.
“It’s been a great experience stepping into another facility and seeing a different model of care from the acute care hospital I am used to working in. The fact that I am walking the same halls as my mom did as a new RN has made the experience even more meaningful."
