Building trust through everyday actions
As part of the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and our CARES values (compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety), we believe that trust is the foundation of good health care.
For many Indigenous patients, trust has been broken by experiences of racism and discrimination in the health system, and the SHA has an important role in repairing that trust. By remaining accoutable and providing culturally inclusive care, we are part of this repair every day, not just on September 30.
Building trust includes small actions that can make a big difference in ensuring culturally inclusive care. Offering Indigenous patients, the opportunity to connect with cultural supports and services available within our acute care settings, learning a greeting in their language, listening without judgment, and making sure patients feel included in decisions about their care, helps to build trust and connection.
By remaining accountable and committing to compassion, respect, equitable care and cultural safety, we can help rebuild relationships that lead to better health outcomes.
Trust grows when we act with integrity and consistency. Patients will remember how we made them feel long after they leave our care.
This September 30 and every day, we continue to commit to actions that make Every Child Matters a living truth in health care.
