Home-based detox service available in Swift Current
On March 21, 2022, a new home-based detoxification (detox) service was launched in Swift Current to enable those seeking treatment for addiction to safely detoxify in their own home under the care of a physician led team.
A home-based detox service reduces travel to a different community where the nearest inpatient detox facility is located and reduces wait times for beds. This increases detox access to patients and their families, and removes local barriers when accessing detox services. The service is available to medically stable participants who have an identified support person to stay with them during the withdrawal period.
Participants feel more comfortable in their own home and this positively impacts their treatment and recovery. Dr. Jason Gatzke, a family physician in Swift Current said of one patient’s experience, “The patient felt the process went smoothly and was appreciative of being able to be at home.”
Why in the home?
- Research supports the majority of individuals withdrawing from substances can do so safely in the home
- Start of process is timely
- High successful completion rates
- Increased connection to local Mental Health and Addiction services and other after care services
- Promotes therapeutic relationship leading to longer term successful treatment
- Include populations that are unable to participate in inpatient services
- Strengthen familial and other informal supports
