Homegrown physician leading change
Since completing her residency in Moose Jaw in 2019, Dr. Karissa Brabant has become a physician leader and change maker.
Born, raised and educated in Saskatchewan, Dr. Brabant manages a family practice clinic where she has special interest in serving marginalized populations including Indigenous Peoples, immigrants, refugees, transgender people and those struggling with addiction.
As a delegate of Saskatchewan Medical Association, she is involved in system improvements at multiple levels, such as working to include Indigenous cultural healing methods. She has been instrumental in making acute care services a collaborative approach, including nursing, family physicians, pharmacy, therapies and transition coordinators. Dr. Brabant shares her knowledge with residents and medical students training alongside her at F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital.
Dr. Brabant is the sole physician at the Opioid Agonist Treatment Clinic, providing care through Opioid agonist therapy (OAT) which helps people manage withdrawals and improves day-to-day functions. “Opioid agonist therapy is a medically necessary treatment because addiction is not a choice, it is a biologic change to the brain that requires management, just like any other condition,” said Dr. Brabant.
Through her dedication and innovative actions, Dr. Brabant is making a positive impact in Moose Jaw, which she calls her forever home.
