Saskatoon low sensory clinic helps kids with diverse needs
The Kinsmen Children’s Centre in Saskatoon held its first low-stimulus, sensory-friendly COVID-19 immunization clinic for children 5-11 years old with special and diverse needs on January 21.
A total of 20 children attended the clinic, many of whom receive services from the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program, as well as a number from the community with sensory sensitivities or needs who have been unable to tolerate mass immunization clinics.
“The feedback we received from parents about this clinic was overwhelmingly positive, owing to the efficiency of the clinic and its calm environment,” noted Dr. Susan Bobbitt, a developmental pediatrician in Saskatoon and medical director for the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program.
There was significant interest in the clinic shown by the community. Referrals came from Public Health, Family Physician offices, community occupational therapists and speech language pathologists, and a Special Education teacher, in addition to caregivers.
“Moving forward, with the support of the SHA, we are hoping to offer this type of vaccination clinic every three weeks,” Dr. Bobbitt noted.
Details on each clinic will be released as they are available.
