SHA staff encouraging changes in correctional facilities
The Dedicated Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (DSATU) program began in the Saskatoon Correctional Centre on May 16, 2022. The DSATU is a partnership between the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety (CPPS), the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) to provide substance abuse treatment services. It is based on the initial DSATU implementation at the Regina Correctional Centre (RCC) which began in 2008. The program provides behavioural therapy, relapse prevention, development of problem-solving skills and goal-setting exercises. This program includes two SHA addictions counselors.
With the program running for over two months the SHA staff shared some very positive feedback including watching the developmental stages of the participants and watching them practice the skills and tools they are learning within the program. Progress groups have been another highlight, listening to the participant’s perspectives of the week. One participant mentioned that they appreciated the small group work, making it easier to talk and knowing that people are listening and care about what is being discussed.
There have been lessons learned about emotions, family dynamics, stress, denial patterns and second chances. There was focus on relapse prevention and recovery as the anticipation of “What Next?” is starting.
“I am beyond grateful that I became a part of the DSATU program,” said one of the SHA addictions counselors. “It was incredible to witness the amount of effort and dedication that the participants have put into the program and towards their recovery. Every individual is different; therefore, their treatment plan is as unique as their fingerprints. It was a pleasure to work with the participants and become a part of their journey. I recognize the importance of providing a client-centered approach that Saskatchewan Health Authority proudly represents as it has helped me to become a more effective support in our community.”
