Surgery is ultimate team sport
The best part of Dr. Ray Deobald’s job as a surgical oncologist in Saskatoon is all the amazing people he works with. Teamwork is especially crucial for successful treatment and recovery for cancer patients, when stakes are high and there is only one shot to do surgery right.
Dr. Deobald grew up in Rosetown, where he became a lifeguard and realized he enjoyed helping people. After finishing his general surgery residency in Saskatoon, he was fortunate to receive an opportunity to do a two year surgical oncology fellowship in Toronto.
Once finished, he and his family returned to Saskatchewan to be close to their extended families and bring his training to his home province. His skill set provides more surgeries in Saskatchewan rather than patients travelling out of province.
Dr. Deobald is determined to give the most accurate diagnosis. He sees the most rewarding part of his profession as the opportunity to be with the patient through their cancer journey right from diagnosis to, thankfully in most cases, being able to remove the tumor and see them through follow up.
“There are hard days, but I also see it as a privilege to be brought into these vulnerable moments in peoples’ lives and be able to walk with them through it,” said Dr. Deobald.
