A unique approach to COVID-19 immunizations at Kenosee
May long weekend signals the beginning of recreational activities at many of Saskatchewan’s Regional and Provincial Parks. Camping, sleeping bags, campfires, s’mores, and vaccines. Yes, vaccines have now become a part of the outdoor experience with a walk-in COVID-19 immunization clinic held at Kenosee Lake in Moose Mountain Provincial Park over the May long weekend.
Taking the immunization clinic to the provincial park was an innovative delivery method. With the anticipation of a large number of cottage owners and recreational campers visiting the park, it presented the opportunity to reach many who had not received their first immunization dose. As more and more young people are becoming eligible, setting up walk-in clinics where they spend significant time makes perfect sense.
“Getting vaccine doses in arms has been a priority,” says Primary Health Care Manager Kristen Sauter. “Taking the clinic to where the people are at was a unique way to ensure we could do that.”
The first clinic of this type proved very successful with over 225 doses of vaccine were administered to people of all ages from 12-90. With the Kenosee Lake area highly populated during the summer months, additional clinics are being planned for the area to provide convenient and easy access to COVID-19 immunizations.
“People were lined up hours in advance of the clinic. We couldn’t have pulled this clinic off without the support of park staff,” adds Sauter. “They have been cooperative throughout the process.”
Getting immunized is only part of seeing our way through this pandemic. Following all public health guidelines, wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and hand hygiene all play a key role in protecting you and your loved ones.
“We were very pleased to see an immunization clinic within the park,” says Park Manager Kim Brown. “Park staff were available to assist with some of the logistics which allowed clinic staff to focus on administering doses.”
