Derek Miller, Chief Operating Officer
In November 2022, Derek was named Chief Operating Officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority after serving in an interim capacity since January 2022. Prior to stepping into the Chief Operating Officer role, Derek covered as the Acting Vice President of Infrastructure, Information and Support after serving as the Commander of the Emergency Operations Centre leading the SHA’s response to the COVID pandemic since early 2020.
Derek was initially hired into the SHA in the role of Executive Director of Infrastructure Management where he was responsible for a provincial portfolio of services including major capital project delivery, building services, clinical engineering, health emergency management and others.
Derek joined the SHA from the former Prairie North Health Region where he was VP of Finance and Operations, and also Project Lead for the Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford – Integrated Corrections Facility Project.
Prior to moving to Saskatchewan, Derek served in the Canadian Forces for 20 years, where his leadership experience ranged from the role of Commanding Officer of a health services centre in Trenton, ON to leading national level procurement projects for the Canadian Forces Health Services Group Headquarters in Ottawa. Derek's educational preparation includes a Master in Business Administration from the University of Manitoba, Bachelor of Arts from the Royal Military College of Canada and Certificate in Health Services Management from Ryerson University. He is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders.
Derek looks forward to continue working with SHA leaders, stakeholders, the Integrated Health and Provincial Programs leadership teams to enable care and the delivery of health services across the province.
First Nations and Métis Health
Shawn Phaneuf - Interim Executive Director, First Nations and Métis Health
Shawn is a Registered Nurse and is a long-term employee who commenced his career with the former Prince Albert Parkland Health Region in 1995. He has a clinical background in Long Term Care, Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Emergency, Ambulatory Care, Dialysis and Chemotherapy units. In his leadership roles, he has focused on high-quality patient and family centered care which expanded in his role as Director of Maternal Children Services for North. Most recently, he was the Director of Clinical Operations and Transitions Victoria Hospital where he has enhanced partnerships with the Ministry of Health, Saskbuilds and our community partners such as Prince Albert Grand Council to advance the planning process for the Prince Albert Victoria Hospital redevelopment project. Shawn has strengthened our relationships with our indigenous partners working closely with First Nations and Metis Health within the SHA. He is a strong advocate for culturally safe and responsive care.
