- Random fecal collection

- Preferred collection container: Sterile pink-top container
Collection procedure
- Collect random stool without contaminating with urine
- Place required amount of stool into a sterile plastic container
- Seal container lid tightly
- Deliver specimens to the laboratory collection site
- For laboratory: Freeze specimen upon receipt in lab; send frozen to the reference lab
Required volume
- Optimum volume: 5 g of feces
- Minimum volume: 1 mL homogenized stool
Transport and stability
- Stable 14 days, refrigerated or frozen
Rejection criteria
- Stool specimens contaminated with urine
- Specimens received where the collection protocols were not followed
