Suicide crisis helpline - dial 9-8-8
Canadians nation-wide can access immediate mental health crisis and suicide prevention intervention by calling or texting 9-8-8. Calls are free and directed to trained responders. The 9-8-8 helpline caters to diverse populations, particularly those who are impacted more often by suicide, such as youth, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two spirit (LGBTQ2+) individuals, survivors of suicide loss and suicide attempts, and Indigenous communities. The 9-8-8 helpline is focused on response to mental health crises.
The new service will help people who are thinking about suicide or worried about someone they know. Physicians, health-care teams, and all employees of the SHA are encouraged to utilize 9-8-8 if needed and to advocate for its use among patients and peers. Mental health matters – and there is strength in asking for help.
Please continue to call 9-1-1 for immediate response to health-care emergencies.
