Violence Prevention & Mitigation - Repair
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace, including protecting all team members from various forms of violence in its workplaces. However, when violence does occur, the SHA will support team members impacted by a violent incident, and make changes or implement new policies as necessary to prevent future incidents from occurring.

Debrief and Support
- Recommend to team members they consult their physician for treatment or referral for post incident counselling
- Provide team members with a list of resources for counselling and support
- Use Trauma Informed Practice to support and debrief with team members
- Engage in low impact debriefing by using language and processes that allow individuals to have a proper emotional release without being further traumatized
- Consider the need for Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) support and the use of a third party facilitator
- Defusing – Brief supportive intervention performed by a clinician or team to an individual or small group immediately (usually 1 to 4 hours) following an incident. The defusing intervention may demonstrate a need to initiate formal debriefing or other supportive services for individuals impacted by the event.
- Debriefing - Group intervention performed by a clinician(s) and peer resource(s) to all team members impacted by a critical incident. The debriefing ideally occurs within 48 to 72 hours of the incident.
