SHA Simulation
The Dilawri Simulation Centre (DSC) exists in partnership between the College of Medicine (CoM) and the Saskatchewan Health Authority. The DSC and resources within are shared between CoM learners and SHA staff learners. Simulation based training is threaded throughout various CoM curriculum and has become part of core training and orientation for multiple nursing units as well as emergency medical services.
Dilawri Simulation Centre
History
The Dilawri Simulation Center (DSC), the foundation of simulation based training in the Saskatchewan Health Authority was opened June 2012 as a state of the art medical training center. The DSC is located in the Regina General Hospital in a joint-use training facility for the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine. The center exists today due to the continued gracious support of the Hospitals of Regina Foundation (HRF) and community donors. To date, HRF has invested a total of 2 million dollars enabling the DSC to facilitate the over 4,200 bookings for over 25,000 learners since opening in June 2013.
Mission: Simulation-Based Training
As the home base for simulation-based training in the SHA, the DSC promotes and supports collaborative simulation-based learning opportunities both locally and throughout the province. By supporting experiential learning through simulation-based training, we are helping to build our SHA health-care provider’s skill, confidence, and practice (integrating theory into practice) to enhance patient safety and patient outcomes.
Vision
- Be accessible to all health disciplines in all locations across the province.
- Promote the vision of Patient-first, Safety-always in a learning environment where it is safe to make and learn from mistakes.
- Open to opportunities that integrate culturally responsible care into simulation-based learning.
- Provide a fun, energized and safe environment and where we engage in challenging skills and scenarios.
- Target inter-professional health-care teams, helping members understand their roles and communicate effectively.
- Incorporate simulation-based training curriculum for students and staff at all levels in all specialties.
- Encourage an avenue to affect quality of care where both quantitative and qualitative changes can be measured and disseminated with others (by posters, presentations, publications, etc.) at regional and national levels.
