Medical Learners
Overview of Medical Learners
Medical Learners participate in clinical experiences within the Saskatchewan Health Authority throughout their medical education.
Undergraduate (Medical Students)
- Year 1-2 - Community Experience is where medical students do a mandatory (curricular requirement) 1 week shadowing experience in the community to gain exposure to family medicine. These often occur in the spring near the end of their first year of training. PREP students after their first year of medical school (usually during their summer break) can spend 4 weeks shadowing a Family Physician. There may also be other shadowing experiences requested to meet curricular needs. This is an optional program offered through the Saskatchewan Medical Association to engage learners that have interest in family medicine. These experiences give medical students the chance to connect with the health system.
- Year 3-4 - Clerkship training occurs for both core and elective students. Students from out of province may participate in clinical experiences in SHA; all OOP students are coordinated through College of Medicine. Students complete these experiences throughout the province which can include rural/regional family medicine.
- Medical students from out of province, or out of country, who wish to shadow a local physician within the SHA and are not fulfilling curricular requirements, need to register for a shadowing experience through Volunteer Services.
Postgraduate (Resident Students)
- Medicine Residents match to programs in Saskatchewan. University of Saskatchewan offers more than 20 different residency programs that vary from 2 to 5 years in duration. They begin their academic year July 1 and may travel to various locations throughout the province to complete their curricular requirements. Residents apply for privileges through Practitioner Staff Affairs.
Allied Health Professionals' input on College of Medicine student (EPA 13)
The College of Medicine is requesting SHA support for assessment of undergraduate medical students by allied health professional (AHP). An AHP, such as a nurse, physiotherapist, pharmacist, etc will be asked by the medical student to fill in EPA 13 (entrustrable professional activity 13) when a student is working with the AHP in the interdisciplinary care of a patient. This EPA assesses a student's interprofessional team collaborative skills.
Medical students may ask for an EPA 13 during their rotation in these SHA clinical environments. Completion of EAP 13 will be done via an app which the student will provide from their mobile device. This will take approximately 2-3 minutes to complete.
