Controlled Medication Waste Disposal Systems
Implementation
The Saskatchewan Health Authority is implementing a waste disposal system for narcotic, controlled and targeted drugs throughout the province.
Using these systems will reduce the risk of opioid abuse and drug diversion of these medications as well as promote the proper disposal of medications.
Two systems are available. The provincial Medication Utilization and Safety Interdisciplinary Committee (MUSIC) recommends that every location that utilizes narcotic, controlled and targeted drugs implement the Cactus system if possible and/or the Rx Destroyer if the Cactus is not feasible for the area's workflow.
