Phase 1: Identify Critical Roles
The Critical Role Identifier template helps determine which roles are most critical to the success of the organization. These roles are crucial to achieving organizational objectives and to driving performance. Critical roles are high in both strategic value and rarity.
Leadership Level Participation
Executive Leader Level
At the executive and senior leader levels (inclusive of both physician and administrative leadership positions at the vice-president, executive director and director levels), all roles are critical. This means that any leaders engaging in succession planning for these levels of leadership do not need to complete a Critical Role Identifier template.
Manager Levels
Succession planning at the manager level requires leaders to identify which roles are critical to fill, as the number of roles increase greatly at these levels, and prioritizing succession planning efforts becomes more crucial.
Critical Role Identifier Template
The time required to complete the Critical Role Identifier template will vary, depending on the number of roles under review. To complete for a single role will take a matter of minutes.
When completing the template, leaders at the level above the critical role identified should lead this work.
