Long Term Care ABC Clean
The Environmental Services portfolio takes pride in providing a clean and safe space for residents in long term care (LTC). The ABC Clean Program was introduced to provide standards and frequencies of cleaning in LTC facilities throughout the province. A number of facilities in the province had been following a similar cleaning program but the names and frequencies were not consistent. The ABC Clean standards were established based on a home environment for the resident, following best practice to determine how often items need to be cleaned.
Work standards for each type of clean were developed in collaboration with Environmental Services managers and our Infection Control partners to provide clear expectations and consistency of cleaning processes. The 3 types of cleans in this program are:
A Clean (daily) - high touch areas in the resident living space and cleaning the washrooms, empty garbage etc.
B Clean (weekly) - perform the A Clean then add dusting, washing floors, etc. to the schedule.
C Clean (every 3-4 weeks) – perform both A and B then include window coverings, high dusting, washing walls, etc.
For more details, please see the Quick Reference Guide and other related documents below.
This ABC Clean Program is being implemented simultaneously with the Clean Audit Program. Environmental Services employees will audit rooms to make sure they are following the schedule for frequency of clean and the standard work for quality assurance.
