Preferred collection container: Sterile screw top tubes supplied in Spinal Tap kit
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 1 mL CSF
- Minimum/pediatric volume: 0.2 mL CSF
Transport and stability
- Send specimen to SPH lab on an ice pack
- Freeze immediately upon receipt in lab
- Ship specimen frozen to referral laboratory
Rejection criteria
- If specimen thaws; it is unsuitable for analysis
- Specimens with visible blood contamination
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
