Specimen types accepted
- Urine
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Sterile wide mouth screw cap container with ORANGE lid
- Alternative collection container: An aliquot from a metal free 24 hour urine jug
Collection procedure
- Keep specimen cool during collection and after aliquotting
- If submitting aliquot of 24 hour urine, refer to 24 hour urine collection procedure and provide volume, dates and times of collection
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 15 mL
Rejection criteria
- Urine collected or received in pink-top container (this container is not metal-free)
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
Testing Information
Relevant clinical history
- Patient is to avoid mineral supplements for 5 days prior to collection
Clinical information
- Specimen will be tested for total arsenic. If elevated, inorganic arsenic analysis will be performed.
- The following are performed simultaneously on all specimens: aluminum, antimony, arsenic (total), barium, beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, uranium
