Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: 24 Hour Urine Jug
- Alternative collection container: Sterile Wide Mouth Screw Cap Container (orange lid)
Collection procedure
- Refer to 24 hour urine collection procedure
- Keep specimen refrigerated during collection and after aliquotting
- If submitting aliquot of 24 hour urine, provide volume and dates and times of collection
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 15 mL urine from either a random urine collection or a 24 hour urine collection.
Transport and stability
- A 24 hour urine collection must be refrigerated during collection time.
- Store and send urine aliquots on ice packs to the lab.
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
