Overview
Description
- Requires a minimum four hour fast, or draw just prior to next feed for newborns.

Preferred Specimen Collection
- Refer patient to a Dynacare Laboratory Health Services Centre or a Hospital Test Centre able to process specimens within required time frame

Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Plasma or Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Dark green (Lithium Heparin) 4.0mL
- Alternative collection container: Red (no additive) 6.0mL
Collection procedure
- Centrifuge and aliquot plasma/serum within 30 minutes of collection.
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4 mL whole blood
- Minimum volume: 2 mL whole blood
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection)
Transport and stability
- Send to SPH on an ice pack
- Freeze immediately upon receipt in the lab.
- Ship frozen to referral laboratory.
Rejection criteria
- If specimen thaws, it is unsuitable for analysis
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
