Collection procedure
- Specimen for this test must be centrifuged, aliquotted and frozen within 45-60 minutes of collection
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4 mL Full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 2 mL serum in two aliquots
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)

- Osteocalcin is a marker for bone turnover; rise of Osteocalcin serum levels in osteoporosis, osteomalacia, renal osteostrophy, bone metastasis, bone fractures, hyperparathyroidism; fall of osteocalcin serum levels in hypoparathyroidism, hypothyroidism and growth hormone deficiency
- Patients with impaired renal function without increase bone turnover may have increased osteocalcin levels
