Description

Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Urine (24 hour collection)
- Random urine collection is ONLY acceptable for pediatric (<17 years) patients.
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: 24 hour urine Jug
- If submitting aliquot: Sterile wide mouth screw cap container
Collection procedure
- Refrigerate during collection
- See 24 hour collection instructions
- State exact collection times, dates and volume of collection on requisition
- Avoid large amounts of Vitamin C for 48 hours prior to collection
Required volume
- Minimum volume: 25.0 mL
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- 24 hour urine: Collect 24 hour urine specimen to which 10 mL of 6 M HCL has been added. Keep specimen refrigerated during collection. Aliquot from well-mixed 24 hour collection the required amount of urine into plastic urine container. Record 24 hour collection date and urine volume. Ensure pH is between 2-4, adjust with 6 N HCL if necessary. Do not over acidify. If unable to acidify, send frozen.
- Random: Adjust to pH 2-4 with 6N HCL. Do not over acidify. If unable to acidify, send frozen. Aliquot required amount of urine into plastic urine container.
- If sending aliquot to St. Paul’s Hospital Laboratory, send on an ice pack.

- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
