Preferred Specimen Collection
- Must be collected at RUH or SPH Test Centres, or inpatient at RUH, SCH, or SPH
- Must be collected Monday to Wednesday, before noon and received in St. Paul’s Hospital Laboratory Referrals by 1300 hrs the same day

- Whole blood
Specimen collection container
- Preferred Collection Container: Yellow (ACD, non-gel) 8.5 mL
- Alternative Collection Container: For pediatrics, Blue (sodium citrate) 1.8 mL
Collection procedure
- Keep specimen at room temperature
Required volume
- Optimal Volume: 8.5 mL Full ACD collection tube
- Pediatric Volume: 1.8 mL Full sodium citrate collection tube
Transport and stability
- Store at room temperature
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
