Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Whole blood
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Lavender top (EDTA) or Yellow top (ACD-A) and Plain red top (Clot activator)
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4 mL lavender top or yellow top and 5 mL plain red top
- Minimum volume: 1 mL lavender top or yellow top and 2 mL plain red top
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- Unspun serum: 48 hours at room temperature
- Separated serum: 48 hours at 4°C or 2 years at -20°C or below
- EDTA: 48 hours at 4 -25°C
Rejection criteria
- Not cleared by on call Transfusion Physician
- Incorrect requisition used
- Unlabeled, illegibly-labelled, mislabeled, or inadequately labelled specimens
- Original labeling must be present and visible
- Incomplete, inaccurate, or illegible information on the requisition
- Discrepancies between requisition patient information and specimen label information
- Collected by – required for all collections
- Date and time of collection
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria

- Transfusions (especially platelets)
- Historic platelet counts
Clinical interpretation
- Antibodies to platelet-specific or HLA Class 1 antigens due to pregnancy or transfusion can result in immune destruction of transfused platelets. Confirming the presence of these antibodies can be helpful in the search for potentially compatible blood products.
