Overview
Description
- For determining CHRONIC exposure to organophosphate insecticides, Cholinesterase RBC is preferred.
- If patient has had recent surgery wait 24 hours post-surgery before blood collection

Specimen types accepted
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Gold (gel) tube 5.0mL
- Alternative collection container: Red (non-gel) tube 5.0 mL
Collection procedure
- Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature.
- Centrifuge within 2 hour of collection or ASAP
- Specimen MUST BE KEPT COOL OR FROZEN
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 5.0 mL full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 2 mL serum
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- Frozen: Over 2 months
- Refrigerated: 2 months
- Ambient: 24 hours
