Description
Ordering recommendation
- The specimen shall be delivered to St. Paul’s Hospital Test Center within 30 minutes of collection

- Sample is to be collected prior to being delivered to the St. Paul’s Hospital Test Center and within 30 minutes of collection

- Preferred collection container: Sterile Wide Mouth Screw Cap Container
Collection procedure
- Specimen shall be collected by preferably masturbation into the container provided
- Lubricants shall not be used during collection
- A condom containing spermicide shall not be used during collection
- Collection only to be done 12 weeks after vasectomy procedure
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 1.5 mL
- Minimum volume: 0.5 mL
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- Stable for 4 hours after collection.
- Specimen shall be kept at 37ºC as best as possible

Relevant clinical history
- The vasectomy procedure is to be performed 12 weeks prior to collection of specimen
Clinical interpretation
- Guideline Consensus (CAN/US/UK)
- Azoospermia of less than or equal to 100,000 immotile sperm/mL are outcomes consistent with successful vasectomy
- Greater than 100,000 immotile sperm/mL: ongoing risk; advise contraception. Recommendation: Submit another specimen in 4 weeks to re-assess.
- Any motile sperm: ongoing risk; advise contraception. Recommendation: submit another specimen in 4 weeks to re-assess.
