Overview
Description
- A diet low in tryptophan is required.
- For 3-7 days prior to collection, the patient's diet should be free of avocado, banana, coffee, tomato, plum, eggplant, hickory nut, walnut, pineapple and mollusks as well as aspirin, corticotropins, MAO inhibitors and phenacetin, catecholamines, resperine and nicotine.

Collection procedure
- Specimen for this test must be collected, processed, aliquoted and frozen within 30 minutes of collection.
- Collect sample in a pre-chilled red top tube; centrifuge and aliquot serum to transport tube
Required volume
- Optimal Volume: Full 4.5 mL collection tube
- Minimum Volume: 1 mL serum
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- Serum stable at refrigerated temperatures for 1 day
- Serum stable frozen for 3 months

- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
