- Preferred collection container: Lavender (EDTA)
Collection procedure
- Specimen for this test must be centrifuged, aliquoted and frozen within 30 minutes of collection or as soon as possible.
- Draw in a pre-chilled lavender-top tube. Separate and freeze plasma immediately. Do not thaw.
- Aliquot MUST be frozen within 8 hours
Required volume
- Optimal volume: Full 4.0 mL collection tube
- Minimum volume: 2 mL plasma
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
- Pediatric volume: 0.6 mL plasma

- Frozen: 1 month

- Gross lipemia or icteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed

Testing Information
Clinical interpretation
- Somatostatin is a neurohormone produced in the brain, hypothalamus and gastrointestinal tract. Elevated levels are observed with somatostatinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytoma
