Description
- See the Pharmacokinetics Lab (PK) requisition on the National Jewish Health website for collection timing (e.g. Number of hours from time of dose to time of peak concentration)
Test ordering requirements
Preferred specimen collection
- Refer patient to a Laboratory Health Services Centre or a Hospital Test Centre able to process specimens within required time frame
Forms required
- Fully complete Pharmacokinetics Lab (PK) requisition, including drug dose amount, frequency, method, and date and time of last dose prior to draw (available on National Jewish website)
- Streptomycin ordered via the SCM ordering system (RUH) requires the Acute Care Phlebotomy Requisition Form #101062

Specimen types accepted
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Red (non-gel)
- Alternative collection container: Lithium heparin (dark green, non-gel); not preferred
Collection procedure
- Allow to clot for 30 minutes, centrifuge and aliquot immediately
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4.0 mL full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- Ship frozen
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Severe hemolysis
