Description
Ordering recommendations
- Fasting specimen preferred. Collect after a 10 hr fast. Patient should be off vitamin supplements for at least 24 hours prior to specimen collection.

Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Red (no additive) 6 mL
Collection procedure
- Centrifuge and aliquot into amber aliquot tube as soon as possible
- Freeze serum as soon as possible or within 45 min of collection
- Avoid hemolysis
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4.5mL Full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 1.0mL
- Pediatric minimum volume: 0.2 mL serum
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection)
Rejection criteria
- If specimen thaws it is unsuitable for analysis
- Specimens received where the collection protocols were not followed
