- Preferred collection container: Light green (Lithium Heparin gel) 4.5 mL
- Alternative collection containers:
Collection procedure
- Centrifuge tube as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection.
- Store refrigerated. For outreach locations, send to testing site refrigerated.
- Cap tube tightly to minimize alcohol loss.
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4.5 mL full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 1 mL
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing). In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
After separation from cells (tightly capped tube)
- Refrigerated (preferred): 14 days
- Ambient: 14 days
- Frozen: 14 days
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- uncapped specimens greater than 1 hour
