Overview
Description
- Patients are recommended to fast for 8 to 16 hours.
Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Plasma
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Light Green (Lithium Heparin)
- Alternative collection container: Gold (gel)
Collection procedure
Collect fasting glucose
Administer 75 gram glucose drink
- Allow 5 minutes for patient to consume the drink
Patient should remain at collections site and rest during testing period
- They should not eat or drink anything other than water during testing period
Collect glucose samples at 1 hour and 2 hours after the patient has finished the glucose drink
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4.5 mL full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 1.0 mL
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
Transport and stability
- 1 hours on cells
- 3 days at 2 - 8°C
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
