Overview
Description
- Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is a sexually transmitted and bloodborne virus, and is a causative agent of infectious hepatitis. Infection with HBV is vaccine preventable.
- HBV surface antibody (HBsAb) testing is used to test for vaccine induced immunity to HBV.
Ordering recommendations
- HBsAb should only be ordered to evaluate patient vaccine induced immunity to HBV, it is NOT suitable for diagnosis of infection.

Specimen collection container
- Serum separator tubes (SST; gold top)
Collection procedure
- Collect blood in serum separator tube (SST). Serum must be separated from whole blood by centrifugation within 24h of collection.
Required volume
- 1 SST (gold top) tube, 5 mL
Transport and stability
- Serum must be separated from whole blood within 24h of collection. Serum may be shipped at ambient temperature.

- HBsAb should only be ordered to evaluate immunity to HBV. This test will NOT determine infection status.

- Quantitative immunoassay via Roche Elecsys (Saskatoon) or Abbott Alinity (Regina), (IU/L in Saskatoon, mIU/mL in Regina)

- Routine specimens are tested in Saskatoon or Regina

Result reporting
- Turnaround time of 3 days from receipt at testing lab.
Specimen retention time
- Serum is retained for 3 days after completion of testing
