  • Whole blood

Specimen collection container

Required volume

  • Optimal volume: 2- 4 mL Lavender top or one - 8.5 mL Yellow top (ACD-A)
  • Minimum volume: as per optimal volume

(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)

Transport and stability

  • Tubes must be shipped at room temperature (20-25°C) and arrive in laboratory within 7 days
  • Do not expose to cold or extreme heat

Rejection criteria

  • Unlabeled, illegibly-labelled, mislabeled, or inadequately labelled specimens
  • Original labeling must be present and visible
  • Incomplete, inaccurate, or illegible information on the requisition
  • Discrepancies between requisition patient information and specimen label information
  • Collected by – required for all collections
  • Date and time of collection
