- See the Pharmacokinetics Lab (PK) requisition on the National Jewish Health website for collection timing (e.g. Number of hours from time of dose to time of peak concentration)

Preferred Specimen Collection
- Refer patient to a Laboratory Health Services Centre or a Hospital Test Centre able to process specimens within required time frame
Forms required
- Fully complete Pharmacokinetics Lab (PK) requisition, including drug dose amount, frequency, method, and date and time of last dose prior to draw located on the National Jewish Health website
Specimen Information
Specimen types accepted
- Serum
Specimen collection container
- Preferred collection container: Red (non-gel)
- Alternative collection container: Dark Green (non-gel); not preferred
Collection procedure
- Aliquot and freeze as soon as possible after collection
Required volume
- Optimal volume: 4.0 mL Full collection tube
- Minimum volume: 2 mL serum
(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
- Pediatric volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma
Transport and stability
- Must be frozen within 24 hours of collection
Rejection criteria
- Specimens received where the proper collection protocols were not followed
- Severe hemolysis
- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Acceptance and Rejection Criteria
