Part of Thrombophilia (Hypercoagulation) Investigation

Ordering requirements

RGH/Pasqua	Forms required: Investigation requisition: Hyper-Coag/Bleeding Disorder/Lupus Anticoagulant LAB Hema (RQHR 217) . Also will accept original requisition completed by ordering physician.
Saskatoon	Forms Required Saskatoon: Thrombophilia Investigation requisition – Form #101521 Thrombophilia Investigation form is not required if only ordering Lupus Anticoagulant Patient should not be on any anticoagulant therapy. If unable to discontinue anticoagulant therapy, suggest consultation with hematopathologist prior to ordering

Alias

Antiphospholipid antibody (ANTPA) includes Anticardiolipin Antibody (ACL)

Specimen Information

Specimen types accepted

Whole blood
Frozen aliquots if shipping from rural (Dry ice preferred must arrive frozen at -20°C)

Specimen collection container

Preferred collection container: BLUE plastic (3.2% Buffered Na citrate)
Collection tube must be filled until the vacuum on the tube is completely exhausted

Collection procedure

Specimens shall be drawn by venipuncture
In the event that this is not possible, the specimen shall only be tested after being approved and reviewed by the Hematopathologist on – call

Required volume

Please see Hypercoagulation/Thrombophilia Investigation when ordering in conjunction with other special coagulation testing

RGH/Pasqua	2 x 1 mL aliquots plasma (received frozen) 2 x 1 mL aliquots red top serum (received frozen)
Saskatoon	2 x 2.7mL 3.2% Buffered Na Citrate or 3 x 1.8 mL 3.2% Buffered Na Citrate

(Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)

Transport and stability

Whole blood specimen shall be received at Special Coagulation Laboratory within 2 hours of collection
Specimen is discarded after reporting. If an extra specimen is collected it is retained for 3 months

Rejection criteria

Line draws
Hemolysis
Clotted
Inappropriately filled tubes
Patient on anticoagulant therapy testing must be cleared by the Hematopathologist on service
Must arrive frozen at -20°C
Plasma specimen that has thawed and been refrozen
Plasma specimen that has thawed for more than 2 hours

Saskatoon	RUH Special Coagulation Laboratory Monday to Friday, 0730-1600 Outside of these hours contact Hematopathologist on call to arrange testing.

Maximum laboratory time

Specimens are batched and testing performed once per week

Specimen retention time

Specimen is discarded after reporting
If an extra specimen is collected it is retained at -70°C

Saskatoon

If Anticardiolipin and (Anticardiolipin Antibodies to Nonspecific Antigen), Anti-Beta-2-glycoprotein are required they must be specifically ordered
