Indigenous Foodways offers traditionally inspired meals
Carmen Jack, a Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) Support Services Manager from Meadow Lake, places great value on the learning she gained from the Food is Our Medicine Program. She and the entire NFS management team completed the training during the development of the SHA’s Indigenous Foodways initiative.
“It taught me to understand and respect the health ways of food, and how it can help with mental health and healing the body,” said Carmen.
The Indigenous Foodways initiative was developed in consultation with First Nations and Métis Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Indigenous communities across Saskatchewan. It represents NFS’s continued commitment to providing traditionally inspired meals using ingredients that are indigenous to Saskatchewan. Meals include bison bone broth, lemon herbed fish, Three Sisters soup, and more.
“We are holding ourselves accountable to the SHA CARES values (compassion, accountability, respect, equity and safety), and our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation through building relationships, respecting Indigenous peoples and understanding the relationship and health behind food,” said Carmen.
Bison stew with bannock, lemon herbed fish, and elk roast are some of the SHA menu items that feature ingredients indigenous to Saskatchewan.
